THESSALONIKI — Police in Greece’s second-largest city, Thessaloniki, are trying to control more spates of violence that broke out after right-wing extremists were said to have attacked high school students twice.
Cordons of police surrounded technical high schools at times to keep out agitators after reports said right-wing youths wearing hoods, masks and motorcycle helmets assaulted students who had been handing out fliers sympathetic to leftist causes, leading to a number of arrests.
Police now said they arrested two two people in clashes with security forces at a march in the suburb of Stavroupoli, with the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency (ANMA) saying the demonstration involved anarchists and other leftists, some of whom threw objects at police who fired tear gas in return.
The two are accused of unlawful weapon possession, injuring a police officer and disturbing the peace, the report said, adding that there was also a march by nationalists that ended without clashes as the left-wing divide increases there.
Police also detained 14 people authorities said were tied to an attack on members of the Greek Communist Party’s youth party wing in Thessaloniki’s major Eleftheria Square where a small group was giving out leftist fliers.
Several the youth wing members were injured, with two being given first aid on site and a third, who suffered a head injury, being taken to hospital, the report also said.
